The true English colonists, 104 of them including men women and children, sailed to Virginia looking to colonize “The New World”, ruled by a council with a president. These firsts colonists were not under tyrannical control of “governor” Ratcliffe who was so desperate to find gold in order to save his reputation. Once again, we’ll see that Disney’s telling of events oversimplifies and misrepresents the original story for the understanding and enjoyment of its viewers. That story would be Pocahontas, or rather Matoaka the Native American “Princess” famous for her involvement with the Jamestown colony in the early 1600s. This week we’ll be exploring a classic Disney story that comes from history rather than folklore.
